I'm parking my car long term! What do I do?!

Our outdoor parking spaces are the most cost-effective way to store your car/truck/suv or boat, and, these tricks could help you to have a great experience while parking at Gopher State Storage - Minneapolis / St Anthony!

  1.           Drain that tank! No need to park with a full tank of gas. Gasoline and other fuels deteriorate as time passes and your engine will not run quite as efficiently if you run it on aged fuels. Is it time to pick up your car? Just take some fuel with you in a gas can and add just enough into it to get to a fuel station to fuel it up again.
  2.           Putting your car in an enclosed storage unit? Just toss a worn 'ole blanket or piece of cardboard underneath engine and transmission area in case any fluids leak to save yourself clean up time when you go to pick it back up. Check the blanket or cardboard to see if anything leaked...and if there's a bunch of oil on the ground, be certain to top it up before firing it up and causing potential damage to the engine - you don't want that to happen!
  3.       Take out that battery! It probably just takes a couple basic tools and will save you hassle later, not to mention it's some simple extra security. Batteries sitting for extended periods of time, especially in extreme cold, deteriorate the battery's ability to hold a charge and/or be charged, and you might find yourself stuck with a bill to get a new one. Keep the battery in a warm location like a heated garage and charge it up before you go to get your car. If you're parked a long time, there's almost no question that you'll show up to a dead battery and need a boost, which is no fun - especially on an extremely cold or brutally hot day!
  4.       Keep your own insurance on your vehicle and make sure your insurance company is aware it is being stored. Parking lots nor storage facilities are liable for thefts or damages that could occur during storage. Absolutely take all valuables, keys, or the title to the vehicle, with you and put them in a safe place, not inside the car.
  5.       Have a worn out set of tires you could toss on the vehicle? Long term storage, say 6+ months.... it is advisable to keep your good tires off the car and stored properly so you don’t get flat spots on your newer tires that cost and arm and a leg to replace!
  6.       Park dead center in the parking spot, with the tires equal distance between the lines, straight. This will greatly help prevent other cars or people scraping up against your car or banging a door into yours.
  7.       PRO TIP: Removing the fuse to the fuel pump will greatly help to prevent theft!
